Karma is coming for Letitia James, Alvin Bragg, and Fani Willis.
Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. and his wife, LaâQuetta, the cityâs superintendent of schools, have been indicted for allegedly beating their teenage daughter.
Both were charged with child endangerment, the Atlantic County prosecutorâs office said. The mayor was also charged with assault and making terroristic threats.
Prosecutors said both parents emotionally and physically abused the girl, who was either 15 or 16, on multiple occasions in December 2023 and January 2024.
In one instance, Small, 50, allegedly beat his daughter in the head with a broom, causing her to lose consciousness. Heâs also accused of punching her and threatening to throw her down a flight of stairs on other occasions.
LaâQuetta Small, 47, is accused of punching the girl, dragging her by the hair and striking her with a belt.
The couple reportedly disapprove of the teenâs boyfriend, according to court documents. The boyfriend shared photos of the girlâs injuries and videos with detectives. In one video, the mayor can be heard saying, âDonât make me hurt you.â
An April raid of the Smallâs home by law enforcement briefly led to corruption rumors before details of the abuse became public. Itâs unknown if the girl is still living in the home.
The charges come less than a week after Atlantic City High School Principal Constance Days-Chapman was indicted with official misconduct and obstruction for allegedly failing to report the abuse, which the teen allegedly disclosed to her last December. Days-Chapman is a friend of the Smalls, and LaâQuetta is her boss.
Mayor Small has refused to resign amid the ongoing investigation, but did step down from working on the campaign of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Fulop.
The Smalls have maintained their innocence and described the matter as a âprivate family issue.â
Their lawyer echoed that sentiment Wednesday.
âMarty and LaâQuetta Small donât need the Atlantic County prosecutorâs office meddling into a private family matter,â attorney Ed Jacobs told The Associated Press.
âMarty and LaâQuetta are a good mom and dad raising a teenage child,â he said. âThey are totally innocent and will be totally exonerated.â
